Bridget’s Friends

The Bridget Jones series has always shown Bridget with a close group of pals, and this movie especially focused on her female friendships, both her old crew and her new co-workers.

A lot of her old group of friends now have children, and aren’t as available for nights of drunken debauchery. We mostly see them at events like christenings and car rides with kids in the backseat, where Bridget and her girlfriends must use puppet analogies to discuss her sex life. Especially hilarious is the return of her friend Jude (Shirley Henderson), whose tiny voice and dirty mouth I could listen to for hours—and who, thank God, has had the good sense to give birth to a daughter in her image. There’s also newcomer Miranda (Sarah Solemani), who’s the goofy bad influence Bridget needs as she turns 43. With her comic timing and her newscaster elegance paired with rebel edge, I’d actually love to see a Miranda spinoff movie.

Among these women in Bridget’s life, there’s this strong sense that all of them absolutely and totally have her back. Even the hair and makeup woman at her job goes to hilariously great lengths to obtain DNA samples from Jack (Patrick Dempsey), one of the maybe-daddies to Bridget’s baby. The scenes near the end where they show her friends in various corners of the city finding out she’s in labor are some of the most heartwarming—you feel sort of embraced and caught up in their collective joy and support.
