The Guilty Feminist

Each episode of The Guilty Feminist begins with hosts Deborah Francis White and Sofie Hagen speaking the words, “I am a feminist, but…” into a microphone. What follows is frequently hilarious – for example, “I am a feminist, but if I had a pound for every time I laughed at a man’s unfunny joke, I would probably finally make 26% more than him.” But they don’t do it just for comedic effect. They do it to illustrate that the perfect feminist, much like the perfect woman, doesn’t exist.

The Guilty Feminist is a comedy podcast recorded at live shows by comedians Deborah Francis White and Sofie Hagen, that is about “our noble goals as 21st century feminists and the hypocrisies and insecurities which undermine them.” Each episode is centered on a theme that women often struggle with (e.g. nudity, exercise, dating, speech). White and Hagen assign themselves challenges related to the theme to complete before the show, and then chat about whether they did it and what their experiences were. The episodes are filled out with stand-up routines, a question-and-answer portion, and a guest host.

Though the women on the podcast are insanely funny, the core of The Guilty Feminist is the unapologetic discussion of real and important issues. In a recent episode with the theme ‘Internet’, White and Hagen invited activist Emma Holton to talk about her experiences as a victim of non-consensual pornography. They never shy away from the seriousness for the sake of being funny, which makes us love them even more.
