10 unforgettable American Horror Story characters

#2: Fiona Goode (AHS: Coven)
Of course, Jessica Lange somehow manages to surpass Jessica Lange on this list. And could there be a better character to top herself with than the Supreme?
Fiona is head of the coven and undoubtedly the most powerful witch around, and she won’t let anyone forget it. But as she ages, she’s losing some of that power. She knows she won’t be around forever, and that’s unacceptable- not only because a successor hasn’t yet risen up, but because a world in which a smoking, all-black-clad, shade-throwing Jessica Lange isn’t in charge is a world I do not care to know. Throughout the season, Fiona’s place at the top is constantly challenged, and her dramatic, gradual demise is both harrowing and fascinating to watch.
Of course, the real-life societal implications of a woman of Fiona’s age being forced out of power by a younger, fresher new model are apparent, and the disturbing, undeniable parallels between the coven’s competitive culture and our own are nothing less than alarming. But that’s what makes Fiona Goode’s story worth telling, worth learning from, and worth revisiting from time to time. That, and Jessica Lange making ultra-hip pop culture references. That’s always worth rewatching.
