The Mindy Project – HULU – October 4
The Mindy Project, created by comedy icon Mindy Kaling, is premiering its fifth season this fall, but it will only be its second on HULU, which picked up the show after it was cancelled by FOX.
The plot follows Mindy Lahiri, a successful OB/GYN who is trying to manage her life at work while balancing the search to find love. Over the course of its first four seasons, Mindy has dated a ton, become engaged twice, and had a baby. But even though the circumstances have changed, the show’s premise remains the same. Mindy continues to stumble through life in designer heels, now as a single, working, dating mom.
Since her days on The Office, Mindy Kaling has been creating and portraying smart, hilarious, and complicated ladies. She has spoken extensively on what it’s like to be a woman of color and of average size in an industry that expects women to be stick-thin and lily-white. And Kaling uses her platform to exemplify the kind of realistic portrayals of women that she (and so many of us) want to see. Her character in The Mindy Project, Mindy Lahiri, is an Ivy League educated doctor who is also deeply invested in celebrity gossip. She is a new mom who also dates and has sex. She cares about her son, her OB/GYN practice, her friends, romantic comedies, fashion, Beyoncé, and McDonald’s, all at the same time. She contains multitudes, and that’s what we want to see.
The Mindy Project premieres its fifth season on Hulu on October 4.
