Queen Sugar – OWN – September 6
If you’re not already looking forward to Queen Sugar, you must not know much about it. The drama series premiered for the first time this fall and everything about it has us racing to OWN to catch it.
Queen Sugar focuses on three siblings, Nova, Charley, and Ralph Angel, who lead very different lives. When their father dies and leaves them his sugar cane farm, the siblings come together in rural Louisiana to carry out their father’s last wishes and face their issues as a family.
Queen Sugar is created, directed, and executive produced by powerhouse Ava DuVernay. You may remember her as the director of Selma, who famously got shut out of her category at the Academy Awards, helping to spark the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. Despite that, DuVernay is becoming a major player in Hollywood. She was hired to helm Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, and The 13th, her documentary about racial inequality, is coming to Netflix in October.
DuVernay is always using her power to promote positive representations of women and people of color, and Queen Sugar is no exception. Along with executive producer Oprah Winfrey, DuVernay is bringing the rarely-produced black family drama to mainstream television. With a partnership between these two unstoppable women, what more could we ask for?
Queen Sugar premiered to enthusiastically positive reviews on September 6 on OWN.
