Transparent – Amazon – September 23
Transparent, the highly acclaimed Amazon show, is set to return for its third season. The series follows Maura Pfefferman, a transgender woman who, late in her life, has just come out to her ex-wife and adult children in order to begin her transition. As her children come to grips with what it means to have a “Moppa” (the nickname they give Maura), Maura embarks on a real journey of self-discovery.
Transparent is inspired by creator Jill Soloway’s own father, who came out as transgender when Soloway was in her forties. And since the beginning, praise for the show has been through the roof. Transparent has racked up awards since its premiere, including both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for Outstanding Comedy Series.
While Jeffrey Tambor gives an incredible performance as Maura Pfefferman (and has the accolades to prove it), the show cannot be separated from the conversation surrounding the problematic nature of casting cis-gender people in transgender roles. However, Transparent’s treatment of Maura and the other queer characters is highly complex and humanizing. Maura herself, both of her daughters, and her ex-wife are all established to be LGBT+. Its representation of queer women and commitment to telling stories that are ignored in the mainstream are more than enough to justify a binge-watch.
Transparent premieres its third season on September 23 on Amazon Prime, but you can watch the first two seasons now.
