Pitch – FOX – September 22

Pitch is an upcoming drama from FOX about the first woman to play Major League Baseball. Which is pretty major because, in case you didn’t know, that hasn’t happened in real life yet.

Relative newcomer Kylie Bunbury will play Ginny Baker, a young woman who has trained in baseball from childhood and is tapped by the San Diego Padres, making her the first female player in the major league. Though the story of Ginny Baker is fictional, creators Dan Fogelman and Rick Singer, along with the rest of the production team, have pulled out all the stops to legitimize the show. Most notably, Pitch is officially associated with MLB, and the San Diego Padres is a real MLB team.

In the trailer for Pitch, you will see the tagline, “A true story on the verge of happening.” And those aren’t just empty words. In the 2014 Little League World Series, 13-year-old Mo’ne Davis pitched a shutout, becoming the first girl to earn her team the championship. Just this past summer, the Sonoma Stompers, a minor league team in the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball, made history by signing two female players, Kelsie Whitmore and Stacy Piagno. In fact, according to FOX casting director Tess Sanchez, Pitch star Kylie Bunbury herself can, in fact, throw a 60mph screwball.

The baseball community has been struggling with the conversation surrounding female players ever since the days of the All-American League. Pitch will almost certainly add to the narrative supporting female players in professional baseball, and inspire some young female athletes in the process.
