Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – The CW – October 21
The first season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend took everyone by surprise last year. The dark comedy musical is about Rebecca (played by co-creator Rachel Bloom), initially a high-powered but unhappy New York lawyer. After a run-in with Josh, her first love from summer camp, she decides to garbage-disposal her mental health meds and follow him to his hometown of West Covina, California. There, she reconnects with him and makes friends with an eclectic cast of characters, including paralegal/dissatisfied wife and mother Paula, hipster pink-haired neighbor Heather, and Josh’s sarcastic bar-tending best friend Greg.
The musical show incorporates hilarious songs with titles like “Sexy Getting Ready Song”, “I’m So Good At Yoga”, and “Heavy Boobs”. But co-creators Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna also built a show that gets its comedy from being smart and self-aware. Rebecca is constantly straddling a line between happy-go-lucky self-improvement and complete and utter self-destruction, making her one of the most compelling characters on television right now. And the critics agree; Rachel Bloom’s characterization and performance of Rebecca Bunch earned her a Golden Globe and a Critic’s Choice Award.
All signs point to success for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s second season, which premieres on the CW on October 21
