Good Girls Revolt – Amazon – October 28
I love a good female empowerment story, but when it’s based on true events, that makes it even better. Good Girls Revolt is based on journalist Lynn Povich’s book The Good Girls Revolt: How the Women of Newsweek Sued Their Bosses and Changed the Workplace. It follows a group of female researchers at a publication called “News of the Week” as they navigate the male-dominated field of journalism in 1969. The real life events that inspired the show culminated in 46 female employees suing Newsweek for sex discrimination when the higher-ups refused to promote them from researchers to writers or reporters.
The pilot episode is already available on Amazon, and it is excellent. The 1960s workplace drama is perfect for people like me, who loved Mad Men but wished it showed more self-awareness around its female characters’ storylines. The all-female writing team is mainly comprised of creator Dana Calvo, who worked on favorites like Greek and Narcos. The cast, including Grace Gummer (who is a dead ringer for her mother, Meryl Streep) as a young Nora Ephron, is stellar across the board. And it’s so refreshing to see a ‘60s period piece that deals directly with feminism and women’s rights.
The rest of the 8-episode season of Good Girls Revolt will air on October 28 on Amazon, but the pilot can be seen there now.
