14. Walder Frey: “Be Our Guest”

"Ma cherie Mademoiselle It is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure That we welcome you tonight And now, we invite you to relax Let us pull up a chair As the dining room proudly presents Your dinner! —Beauty and the Beast"

Okay, so this one would work better if Lumière had ended this little speech with “your murder,” but we have to work with what we’re given. I dabbled in some sick irony to draw a connection between Walder Frey and the show-stopping “Be Our Guest,” for which I sincerely apologize. I’m a Stark devotee to the bitter end, but this still makes me laugh. I have to deal with the lingering grief somehow.

Walder Frey gained Game of Thrones infamy when he invited the Starks to be his guests and then, rather than dazzle them with an enchanted dinner theater, he had them slaughtered. Guest right is an enormously important hospitality rule in Westeros. It once guaranteed safety for guests under their host’s roof. But after Frey used guest right as a means to betray the Starks during what would become known as the Red Wedding, the custom lost all meaning.

Once this rule was broken, it apparently no longer applies. There is no safe haven for travelers when they can’t trust their host to adhere to old laws. This is alluded to in Season 4, when the Hound and Arya meet a farmer and his daughter, Sally. The farmer claims that Walder Frey “committed sacrilege,” and the Hounds replies, “Guest right don’t mean much anymore.”

All in all, the connection between character and song works on some level. But Walder Frey does a really shoddy impression of Lumière.
