17. Melisandre: “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo”
"Salagadoola mechicka boola Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo It’ll do magic, believe it or not Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo —Cinderella"
Like Cinderella’s fairy godmother, Melisandre manages an impressive feat of magic in the resurrection of Jon Snow. Although she claims that it was the Lord of Light’s will that brought Jon back, we all saw Melisandre handle that hocus-pocus just fine on her own. Like “bibbidi-bobbidi-boo,” Melisandre’s magic didn’t look like anything special, but it did the trick. It just goes to show that you don’t need a lot of bright flashing lights to work miracles.
The fairy godmother’s interference marks a new beginning for Cinderella, just as Melisandre’s does for Jon. While at their core, Cinderella and Jon remain the same people, the magic bestowed upon them splits their life in two. There is now the time before the magic, and the time that exists after. It’s cheesy but nevertheless applicable to say that nothing will ever be the same.
This is especially significant for Jon, who leapt from life to death and back again. He’s not a brand new person post-resurrection, nor is he the same Jon Snow as he was before. He is understandably disillusioned, and as such “honor” isn’t quite enough for him anymore. Melisandre is the one who bridged that gap for him. As the fairy godmother does for Cinderella, Melisandre made it possible for Jon to pick up where he left off, and yet begin anew at the same time.
