20. The Night King: “Be Prepared”
"It’s clear from your vacant expressions The lights are not all on upstairs But we’re talking kings and successions Even you can’t be caught unawares —The Lion King"
For a guy who can raise the dead just for them to join the ranks of his army, no musical number quite suits the Night King like “Be Prepared.” The White Walkers are the most formidable foe Westeros has yet to face. Indeed, this legion of the undead may serve as a rallying point for the dueling families of the country. If they want to make it through the winter alive, they’ll have to put their differences aside and join forces.
Whether you’re Stark or Lannister, Targaryen or Greyjoy, Martell or Tyrell, there’s no allegiance to be struck with an enemy like the White Walkers. With these guys, It’s kill or be killed—there’s no negotiating otherwise. The Westerosi nobility may be aces at political scheming, but not even the likes of Littlefinger will be able to tempt these baddies with a good time. Unless that “good time” is a little slicing and dicing through the entirety of mankind, that is.
With the White Walkers so assuredly on the march, the monarchy doesn’t seem as important as it’s been in seasons past. Of course, by series’ end, some political cleanup will be necessary. But for now, it’s less about the proper line of succession and more about survival. We’ll have to keep our fingers crossed that our favorite characters will be prepared for what’s coming.
