21. Ser Pounce: “Ev’rybody Wants to Be a Cat”

"Everybody wants to be a cat Because a cat’s the only cat Who knows where it’s at —The Aristocats"

“In the game of thrones, you win or you die,” Cersei once told Ned Stark. Considering the sheer number of character deaths we’ve seen from this series, it seems that, truly, no one is safe. It’s probably best to stay out of Westerosi politics altogether. Then, at least, you’ve got a fighting chance. After all, you don’t see just anybody getting their heads chopped off by order of the king.

This is where Ser Pounce has got it right. As the unassuming pet of too-good-for-this-world Tommen Baratheon, the cat has got his survival tactics down to a tee. It’s simple—just be a cat instead of a power-hungry or too-honorable-to-live noble. For his short time onscreen, Ser Pounce lived the life of luxury. No worries, and he gets to bask in the glow of sweet Tommen’s adoration. If you’re going to be raised by a Baratheon prince, Tommen is surely your best option. Joffrey probably would have declawed Ser Pounce with his bare hands if he’d had the chance.

Not to mention, Ser Pounce also had the privilege of scoring screentime with Margaery Tyrell. And who wouldn’t want Natalie Dormer running her fingers through their hair? Let’s face it—if she offered, we’d queue up around the world. But, alas; it seems that in this case, the gods smile only upon Ser Pounce.

So what became of Ser Pounce since we last saw him in Season 4? Well, as far as Dean-Charles Chapman is concerned, the cat was likely another casualty in the Sept of Baelor’s fantastical light show. (Or explosive massacre. Whatever.) Personally, I like to think that Ser Pounce found refuge with some swingin’ jazz cats of his own. With any luck, he’s continuing to live the uncomplicated life of a cat in the rough-and-tumble world of Westeros.
