13. Bronn: “Friend Like Me”

"You’ve got some power in your corner now Some heavy ammunition in your camp You got some punch, pizzaz, yahoo and how See, all you gotta do is rub that lamp —Aladdin"

In Bronn’s case, “rub that lamp” translates to “loosen those purse strings.” Like Genie to Aladdin, Bronn is committed to Tyrion not through initial affection, but some sort of assigned duty. While Genie is bound to answer to whomever holds his lamp, Bronn is a sellsword willing to give himself up to the highest bidder. Both relationships begin as business and turn to genuine friendship.

Before Bronn, it would seem that Tyrion had no real friends at all. His power lay only with his name and wealth, and the influence those yielded. As it happens, that wasn’t always enough to get Tyrion out of trouble. We see this as early as Season 1, when Lysa Arryn calls for a trial by combat to test Tyrion’s innocence in the murder of her husband. While Tyrion has a way with words, he is by his own admission no warrior.

Enter Bronn. He adds the brawn to Tyrion’s brains, and in fact adds a little something to the intellectual conversation as well. Bronn is never at a loss for a quip, word of advice, or a stab for anyone Tyrion bids deserves one. He brings everything that Tyrion had been lacking to the table. We can only hope that, like Genie and Aladdin, these two will be reunited at some point. Bronn and Jaime’s bromance is all right, but we ain’t never seen a dynamic duo like Bronn and Tyrion.
