#19: How the Ghosts Stole Christmas

Another holiday, another adventure for our heroes to embark upon, leaving their families and friends behind in favor of ghosts and ghouls and haunted houses. Not that I’m complaining.

It’s Christmas Eve and Mulder, as he does, lures Scully out in the middle of the night to investigate a mansion that houses a super X-Filey legend: a young couple, unwilling to be without each other in life or in death, made a pact to die together. Unlucky for Mulder and Scully, this murder-suicide has resulted in a yearly December 24th haunting, wherein the haunters try to trap the hauntees inside the house by any means necessary.

Lucky for us, however, the ghosts are played by Ed Asner and Lily Tomlin, and their antics combined with a terrified-but-trying-to-be-brave Scully and an all too easily manipulated Mulder result in nothing but silly, ghosty, Christmassy fun for us.

In a Yuletide miracle, Mulder and Scully make it out of the house unscathed and intact, if not a little shaken from their night of “wait, did we imagine that, or did that actually happen?” excitement. And even though the ghosts were unsuccessful in their quest to lure the agents into eternal togetherness, their sweet, unplanned gift exchange makes me think (hope?) that they wouldn’t really have minded after all.
