7. Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk (November 11th)

(Based on the novel by Ben Fountain)

What: Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk is a satirical novel about soldiers returning home from the Iraq War and the disconnect that occurs between the war they are fighting and their lives at home. Lynn (Joe Alwyn) and the members of Bravo Squad return to the United States after an intense battle for a “Victory Tour” in the hopes of improving American morale and support for the war. The story takes place during one day of the tour, the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving game at Dallas Stadium. However, Billy and his fellow soldiers soon realize that coming home is harder than they thought, leading them to question war, the media, and the American dream.

Why We’re Excited: Billy Lynn is being directed by Ang Lee of Life of Pi and Brokeback Mountain fame. What makes this film exciting and potentially revolutionary is that it was shot at a higher frame rate than usual, resulting in an ultra-clear image. The point of this filming technique is to create an immersive experience putting the audience inside the film, which could make for a very interesting viewing experience especially with a film that deals with such a heavy topic. The film also stars Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Chris Tucker, and Steve Martin.
