4. The Girl on the Train (October 7th)

(Based on the novel by Paula Hawkins)

What: Last summer’s “it” book had everyone talking, as well as comparing it to Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl (which was also turned into a film directed by David Fincher). This story features Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt), a woman who takes the same train every day and makes up stories about the lives of the people who live in the houses she passes. Some of the lives she doesn’t have to imagine, she used to live in one of those houses, except now that is where her ex-husband Tom (Justin Theroux) lives with his new wife Anna (Rebecca Ferguson). One day Rachel thinks she sees a crime committed while on the train, but is she seeing things correctly or has the drinking to cope with her dissolved marriage finally caught up with her?

Why We’re Excited: This psychological thriller divided readers with its unlikable characters and ending you either loved or loathed. Casting Blunt in the lead role is a good move because she is an extremely likable actress no matter the who she is playing (just think of  her character in The Devil Wears Prada). Plus the book relies on the use of an unreliable narrator and it will be interesting to see just how they keep the audience guessing.
