17. “What’s Good With You”
"Don’t try playin’ with my mind Boy I don’t have no time For something that I know ain’t good for me"
These lyrics suggest more of a preemptive strike than a “hindsight’s 20/20” experience. But after a certain number of misses, you’re bound to see a future one coming once in awhile. For all the times someone’s messed with your head or you’ve messed with your own, there will be those where you’re going to catch what’s going on and say thanks, but nah.
In my experience, you can go through enough wrong to finally figure out what’s right for you. Sometimes you don’t know that you don’t want something until you’re stuck dealing with it. Once you learn that, it’s easier to recognize the signs and put the kibosh on an oncoming failure. You don’t have to “just give him/her a chance” or “just see what happens—you never know” if you’re not feeling it from the start. That may be all well and good at first, but how many times do you want to go through the same old song and dance, no matter how different the partner? Whatever your relationship goals, that game gets old.
You know yourself, and you know what’s best for you. If you can see a potential relationship crashing before it even leaves the station, it’s probably best to skip the trip. Listen to Beyoncé, kids.
