19. “Run the World (Girls)”

"This goes out to all my girls That’s in the club rockin’ the latest Who will buy it for themselves and get more money later"

“Independence” is a major theme that runs throughout Beyoncé’s discography. No matter your relationship or station in life, you have to look out for you in every respect. That’s not to say that there’s no one else who has your back. But you have to have a handle on yourself in the journey to finding out who, exactly, “yourself” is. When we consider everything Beyoncé herself has accomplished thus far, it comes as no surprise that independence is one of her major motifs.

Of course, you can do all of this regardless of relationship status. But the point is that you shouldn’t rely on a significant other to be the breadwinner and spoil you. Be your own breadwinner. Spoil yourself. You want the princess treatment? You don’t need a prince, princess, or androgynous noble to get it. Run your own world and always treat yourself right. If a romance is what you want in the future, you’ll find it. Until then and even after, nobody can love you like you can love you. Nobody else can get you to that realization. Put yourself first for awhile, and you won’t need anyone else to tell you that you’re worth it. You’ll already know it for yourself (although compliments are, of course, always appreciated).
