The end of a relationship can really bring some things into perspective, and others you’re forced to question. What did your ex-partner mean to you? Was the problem the person, or the circumstances? How does the split affect your personal and future relationship goals? What do you need to change? Is romance even something that you want on your radar anymore? Who are you separate from this relationship, from any of your relationships?
The process can get pretty existential crisis-y. So be it. This is the time to post motivational quotes and relationship memes all over your Facebook. It’s when you figure out or reaffirm who you are. This is how you build your perfect breakup songs mix. Maybe you take up cooking or a new language, or you binge watch that show you hadn’t had time for. Through your post-breakup coping mechanisms, you can get back to yourself. And in the interim, you pick up pieces of the person you want to become.
After spending so much time learning about someone else, and living a life of two instead of one, you have to take the time to reacquaint yourself. You can get so caught up in a relationship that you forget you’re a person all on your own, too. If the relationship ends, the first thing you need to do is focus on you—what you need, apart from anyone else. Remember that you’re a unit all unto yourself, and make you the priority. There’s so much more out there for you apart from romance. Now’s the time to discover it.
