5. “Me, Myself and I”
"I realized I got Me, myself and I That’s all I got in the end That’s what I found out And it ain’t no need to cry I took a vow that from now on I’m gonna be my own best friend"
So it didn’t work out, and you feel like you should have seen it coming all along. There’s a time between a breakup and the next relationship where you’d rather just give up. I’ve been there, several times, and I know I’m not alone. Why continue to put yourself through the ringer when you’re happier with your unattached self?
You know your own limits, expectations, and goals, so you know that you’re not going to disappoint yourself the way others have. You’re not going to play games with yourself. Maybe you’ll lie to yourself a time or two, but more often than not the reality check’s not far behind. Despite what you try to convince yourself, you still know what your real deal is. Those aren’t assurances you can get with a romantic partner, especially one with whom you have a less-than-stellar history.
Maybe sticking to single isn’t an especially romantic notion, but why does it need to be? You have to be able to rely on yourself to get through whatever life throws your way. Falling in love with yourself is the most important relationship you’re going to establish. The satisfaction never stops when you find that contentment with yourself. You’ll have your good and bad days alike, but at the end of them all, you have your own back. Sometimes it takes a lousy relationship to make you realize how much you just need you. But once you know that, you can take it from there on your own, and that’s where real empowerment lies.
