8. “If Looks Could Kill (You Would Be Dead)”

"See, I have dreams, and with a man, what will become of them? There’s not a kid out here who can make me believe I should postpone my goals, he got tricks up his sleeve? Whole bar full of cuffs and you ain’t locking me down"

Throughout my own relationships, I tended to put my goals on the backburner while I concentrated wholly on my partner. As it happens, all that effort was for naught, since here I am, twenty-six and single. But what I’ve figured out is that my personal growth should have come before my love life all along. It took awhile, but I got there. Ultimately I made a choice to put myself first, and so far things are going well; really, I think I’m The One.

Back to it… None of this is to say that you can’t achieve your dreams with someone by your side; most of the people I know are accomplishing just that. The point is to find the right person to do that with. Not everyone will have the patience for your long hours, or the understanding that you’re doing what you need to get to what you love. One thing will always take precedence over the other. You have to find the balance, but more than that you have to be with someone who can support that balance with you.

Taking on an active personal and professional life is a team effort. You just have to decide what you’re playing, how you’re playing it, and pick your partner(s) thusly.
