9. “Why Don’t You Love Me”

"There’s nothing not to love about me I’m lovely […] Maybe you’re just not the one"

“What’s wrong with me? Why don’t they want me? What did I do wrong? Why couldn’t I make it last?” are all questions that can pop into a post-breakup mindset. First and foremost, it’s important to remember through the heartache that there’s nothing wrong with you. No matter the reason for a breakup, it essentially boils down to some sort of incompatibility. It’s not you and sometimes it’s not even them—it’s that you don’t work together.

We always want an answer that offers us closure, but it’s not always available or even possible. It’s frustrating but sometimes the vague “It just didn’t work out” is the best you can do. There’s nothing to dissect or examine. Maybe the love fizzled, maybe one or both of you changed from the person you each fell for, or maybe it just doesn’t click anymore. They’re not satisfying explanations, but there are times when the end of a relationship is entirely blameless. You have to talk yourself through it and come to accept it. It can take a lot of tough love to get there, but it’s better than sitting around wondering what you did wrong.

There’s not a definitive answer to everything. As important as closure can be in the healing process, there are things you just have to let go of.
