12. “Don’t Hurt Yourself”
"I am the dragon breathing fire Beautiful mane, I’m the lion Beautiful man, I know you’re lying I am not broken, I’m not crying, I’m not crying"
The seven stages of grief often accompany a breakup in some way or other. Whichever steps you might skip, anger can be vital to the adjustment process. Indeed, when you end things on bad terms, anger is pretty unavoidable.
Between shattered trust, broken promises, and spoiled plans, your disillusionment will start showing. And at some point you’re probably going to ask yourself, “What did I do wrong?” Sometimes the end of a relationship takes two, but when it’s one person who causes all the grief, it’s got nothing to do with you. Your partner cheats on you? That’s not about you, despite how they might try to manipulate you into thinking that way. Tell them where they can stick it and then focus on yourself. They’re only worth the tears if you think crying will do you some good.
Just because you broke up doesn’t mean you have to break. Liberate yourself from all the bull: Change your relationship status. Give the clothes they left at your place to Goodwill. Snap the chain off the necklace they gave you. Have a cleansing bonfire in which you burn all the photos of the two of you. Have a drink and swear, a lot. Get mad, let it simmer, and then move on.
