Benedict Cumberbatch: Granny Smith

Benedict Cumberbatch is somewhat of an acquired taste, but once you acquire it, whoa boy. The star of Sherlock and this fall’s Marvel superhero film Doctor Strange has unusual features, including those gorgeous penetrating blue eyes that seem to sense exactly what you’re thinking. (You’re thinking about him. Admit it.) He’s so perfectly cast as the brilliant, quick-witted, yet totally acerbic Sherlock Holmes on television, it’s hard to picture others in the role–and hard not to be jealous of his partner John Watson. The man can wear a black suit and sport a popped collar like no one else, and as Sherlock, Cumberbatch can brood with the best of them (which is good since the next season of Sherlock promises to be especially dark and moody).

Like Cumberbatch, the Granny Smith has a tart edge, but that’s what makes it stand out from the crowd—in salads, pie, or that grown-up applesauce that makes you pucker your lips but come back for a second helping. Also like Cumberbatch, it’s versatile, able to make the transition from multiple dishes as he hops from the small screen to the big. If you’re eagerly waiting to hear Cumberbatch do an American accent in Doctor Strange, take a bite of this one-of-a-kind fruit.
