Witney Carson: Vanilla Ice, the one-hit wonder
CAMDEN, NJ – AUGUST 06: Rapper, actor and TV host Vanilla Ice performs during I Love The 90’s Tour at BB
Robert Matthew Van Winkle, known to the world as Vanilla Ice, is kind of the opposite of Babyface, the other middle-aged singer. He, when it came down to it, did one big thing in his life, and everyone knows he’s the one who did it. There is no-one today reading about Dancing with the Stars that has not gotten “Ice Ice Baby” stuck in their head while doing so. We’ve all heard it somewhere, even if it was the Bowie/Queen original. Unfortunately, he still has the same problem as Babyface, in that his career is not the kind that builds the kind of fanbase that gets him votes. There may even be people who refuse to vote for him, either because they are judgmental of his sometimes troubled life, or simply because the song drives them crazy. Witney does bring in some votes, though, if not enough to keep them going too long without his help.
He can get past this one or two ways. He might be able to show some dancing ability, especially since he’s actually not that old; he’s only 48. Or he could tell the story of his life and how he overcame his darker years in such a way as to get people to like him better. Being a good dancer is the better bet, if he can do that.
