No one doubts that we’ll get robot companions in the near future. It may sound a cliche plot point in a sci-fi show, but this future accessory is closer than you might think. We have the beginnings of robot friendships now, thanks to Siri and Paro, the therapeutic robot seal. Google even has a documented patent for robotic personalities.

Still, what’s going to happen when robots finally gain sentience and start asking why they’re not programmed to love? Worse, they might even begin to wonder why we give them all the worst jobs, like vacuuming the carpet or parallel parking. When that time comes, your most fashionable accessory might actually be a pervading sense of guilt and ethical unease. At least your new robot friends will appreciate it.
