This could be possible thanks to bioluminescent bacteria and algae embedded within the fabric of your clothes and other materials. Finally, we’ll get to move on from those lame glow sticks and look as cool as plankton and jellyfish.

Scientists are already working on practical uses of this technology, like living streetlamps and toxicology tests. They’ve even engineered glowing cats to research HIV and AIDS. Some scientists even envision homes where the walls glow thanks to materials containing bioluminescent organisms. It’s only a matter of time before it becomes a widespread fashion statement.

It’s deeply cool to think that we can harness these organisms for a good purpose, and look good while doing it. Just don’t forget to feed the algae in your skirt.
