Karen Gillian’s last episode of Doctor Who aired in 2012. In it, Amy Pond purposefully let herself be zapped back into the past in order to be with her husband and we all ugly cried together. She did make a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it return to say goodbye to Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor when he regenerated in 2013, which was nice but also made us cry again.
Gillan then landed a starring role in ABC sitcom Selfie, a modern-day retelling of My Fair Lady set in the world of social media. Unfortunately, it got cancelled after just seven episodes. The much stronger back six episodes of the show were eventually streamed on Hulu, but don’t watch them if you can’t stand to feel terrible about what might have been. (It really did improve A LOT.)
Happily, she found much more success with her role as the villainous Nebula in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Gillan got to shave her head, paint herself bright blue and beat the crap out of on-screen sibling Zoe Saldana. She’ll be back for the sequel, which is slated to release in May of 2017.
