Between one thing and another, halfway through the second week of the Games, the US, though they had won a couple of gold medals on the field, had won none on the track. Then a trio of lady hurdlers, looking to make up for lost time, went and swept that podium, the last of them edging out the bronze in a furious photo finish.
This was on Wednesday, just when Dancing with the Stars, if they were trying to sign Lochte, would have first had to face that he might not work out. They might have started the search for a replacement on Thursday. But it’s possible they could’ve called Brianna Rollins’ agent as soon as the race ended, and she had just enough laurels it’s not impossible she was on their radar already. The sweep keeps her special, even when she ultimately would not be the last American to claim gold on the Rio track. Meanwhile, another result of such an event is that they might well be happy to have any of the trio involved. If Rollins turns them down, they might next approach her teammates.
The stigma left over by Lolo Jones, of course, will apply more strongly to them than to Felix, since they compete in the same event as her. But, again, that was mostly her, and hopefully the producers will realize these bright-grinning high-jumping girls shouldn’t be anything like that.
