45. Margaery’s Wide Necked Column (Season 2)

Margaery’s looks in Season 2 weren’t exactly flattering, but they were extremely striking. Her first entry into our countdown (but far from her last) is her second as “Renly’s Queen,” and her most memorable from the second season. There’s a masculine aspect to her look. The heavy brocade dress is imitative of the doublets that men like her brother would wear, including the sleeves being detached and worn as a separate layer. This captures the essence of her relationship with her now deceased husband. She was the man in the relationship, the strength and the driving force behind it.

When we meet Margaery in Season 2, all of her outfits sport some of Renly’s bronze tones. But her main color was always Tyrell blue and green. Margaery is the head of the Tyrell family, whatever anyone says. Her sporting the family colors so strongly in the early seasons establishes the color palette we go on to see the rest of Tyrells in going forward. (It also makes it very noticeable later on when she stops sporting them.) This enormous neckline is also established as a Margaery look. When we see it again on others, we know that it is her style influencing the people around her and not the other way round.
