17. Daenerys’ Woven Gown (Season 5)
This is my personal favorite of the Dany gowns in Season 5. The silhouette of this gown ties back to the silhouettes Dany has been sporting since Season 2, with the pleated skirt insert under the stiffer outer layer that drops down from the bodice. But with losing her Dothraki horde, Dany has dropped the blue from her wardrobe that once visually served to define the inner and outer layers of her gowns. So there was a need to have something there to bring back that definition. For this gown, Michele Claptoon chose a woven look that mimicked dragon scales, and traveled down all the way the shoulderless built-in cape.
In short, unlike her other ruling gowns, this is the only dress that still recalls who Dany was before she sat down to rule Meereen. It’s no accident that she wears it in every scene where she refuses to open the fighting pits. It’s also the she wears when she tells Tyrion how she will break the wheel of rulers that have plagued Westeros all these years.
This is also the first gown she has worn with built-in metal accessories since she wore the huge filigrees in Qarth. Note that that metal part of the keyhole will return, at the end of Season 6 when she finally dons her first true Targaryen dress.
