22. Margaery’s Sparrow Queen Gown (Season 6)

Margaery’s day dresses in Season 3 are the closest we see to her expression of self and who she is as the woman carrying the fortunes of House Tyrell upon her shoulders. The dress Margaery wore when she died spoke volumes of how far she had been forced to move away from that since marrying Tommen. As we saw in her other Season 6 gown, her newfound religious “conversion” demanded she cover herself from neck to toe. And though she tried, at least when she was not in public, to show her Tyrell loyalty by reverting to wearing their House colors instead of the Baratheon ones, in public, she knows that she must visually look to be one with the High Sparrow. And that was the most important thing when attending the public show trial that included both her brother and the Queen Mother.

This dress looks the part. If someone were to look at the grey rags that the High Sparrow and his followers wear, and then create the “Royal Queen” version of them, they would be exactly this. (This is one of the four dresses Michele Clapton designed, despite having left the production in Season 6.) The gown is a brocaded silk so thin, it might have been see through if it was not so dark. The gray chiffon drape is the exact same color as the Sparrow’s rags. She is, every inch, playing the Sparrow Queen here. The High Sparrow is too blind to see through it. But then again, if he was smart enough to see through her, he might have also seen though Cersei, and not gotten them all killed.
