24. Cersei’s Funeral Look (Season 5)

Cersei wasn’t even this striking when mourning for her oldest son the year before. If mourning wear has become Cersei’s default gowns during Game of Thrones last three seasons, then the crowning glory is her moment in the Season 5 premiere as she attends the funeral of Tywin Lannister. The death of Joffrey might have appalled and terrified her, but it’s the death of her father—the true power of the family, and the man who both held her back and protected her from herself—that undoes her completely. It’s not until Tywin dies that we see the wholesale swap to black, and the determination to remind everyone around her just how much she’s lost in the last year.

There’s a reason this is the first outfit we see her in that season, as she parades up the steps of the Sept of Baelor into the funeral. It directly contrasts how we see her at the end of Season 5, parading back down the steps of the Sept, stripped to the skin, in her Walk of Shame in the finale. At the beginning of the Season, she is at her most regal, from the crown of braids to the square-heeled boots. How far she will fall from this to nothing.
