32. Cersei’s Blue Dress (Season 2)

This is Cersei’s most outlier outfit of the entire series. Cersei wears red and gold once Robert passed away, since the highborn characters in Westeros tend to wear the colors of their house. While he was still alive, she would occasionally stray from his browns and golds into violet. She wears stags when Robert is alive, but once he was out of the picture, she swaps back to the Lannister colors, and her trusty and fierce lions.

So what’s up with this blue number, months after Robert was dead? Adorned with birds, of all things? The reason is twofold. First: in this scene, Tyrion is sending Myrcella away to Dorne. This is the last thing her daughter may ever see her in (in fact, it will be), and so Cersei is dressed maternal and sweet. But second, and just as importantly, it’s also statement of how utterly out of control she is in this situation. Cersei may play the game like there’s no tomorrow in King’s Landing, but when it comes right down to it, when men decide to exert power over her and her family, there’s nothing she can do about it. She is, at this moment, a bird in her gilded cage.
