50. Red Priestess Outfits

I wasn’t a big fan of Melisandre’s outfits in the beginning, with the red cloak on red gown with red wig. Once the point was made, her outfit became a bit like the religious version of normcore, so predictable you stopped seeing it. It wasn’t until Season 5, when we saw a second Red Priestess for the first time that I started taking a second look at Mel. The comparison was striking, even though her Volantis counterpart was on screen for less than five minutes. The red was duller, with an armored like bodice that looked like dragon scales, and those huge bell sleeves.

Then Kinvara arrived In Meereen this season, along with her preachers, and we had the triangulation of these two looks. Kinvara’s gown style was much closer to Melisandre’s, yet a darker duller red like the Volantis version. Unlike either, it was closer to something approximating what we’ve seen the ruling classes wear, with large metal appliques down the front, echoing those mayoral chains of old, suggesting her rank. The more we see of what this religion wears—the religion, it should be noted, that is on the right side of history—the more I want to see more of them.
