36. Cersei’s Mourning Looks (Season 5)

These are Cersei go-to gowns in Season 5, a redoubling of her mourning looks from Season 4 after Joffrey’s death. Though she mourned her son, her mourning for her father, the true power in the family, seems to be far more pervasive throughout Season 5, that she wears up until she is arrested.

On the left, we have the looser, southron style we see her wearing whenever she’s relaxed or vulnerable. (It’s no accident she wears it in this scene talking about Myrcella being threatened, or when telling Tommen she would do anything to protect him.) The lion heads are embossed and beaded on the shoulders, but there’s no armor or stiffener around the middle. The gown is casually tied with golden ribbons, and though there is still a whole lot of black on black with gold interiors, one can clearly see in this image the swirling vines of things growing, despite grief’s chill.

On the right, we have the more armored look, with the wide metal belts. This is her same armored red gown from before, redone in black. She wears it whenever she is girding herself against an enemy, and as we know, anyone who is not a Lannister is an enemy. This second gown carries straight through to Season 6, after Myrcella’s body is returned.
