37. Daenerys’ Qarth Look (Season 2)

After spending most of Season 1 wearing either borrowed clothes, horse leathers, or nothing but dragons, in Season 2, Dany began to come into the style we would come to associate her with for the next few years. After crossing the Red Waste and finding her way to Qarth, upon entering the city, this outfit above is the genesis of the style we would see her in going forward until she became the Queen of Meereen.

Dany wears her first outfits of her own choosing, under the patronage of Xaro Xhoan Daxos. Her first, and most luxurious, is a blue brocade bodice, that hangs down over her skirts. It’s a look we’ll see echo’d in richer and richer versions, with the skirt beneath turning to white silks in Season 3 and 4. In this one though, the skirt below is still brown horse leathers. Regal from the waist up, Dothraki from the waist down. Along with them she also took to wearing enormous gold filigree accessories, both in belt form and in a neck ruff style. Clearly these were her wearing a type of armor, and suggested how vulnerable she felt in this strange city. But wow, were they striking.
