39. Daenerys’ Dothraki Leader Outfit (Season 6)

After years of watching Dany lose herself in Meereen, as she spent episode after episode attempting to foolishly rule this city on Slaver’s Bay without attempting to win the hearts and minds of the people first, it was a huge relief at the end of Season 5 to see her leave. The beginning of this past season started slow, as Dany was first brought low in rags, and then reminded of what the patriarchy would have her believe in a woman’s place in this world. She responded how any sensible girl would, burning down their patriarchy, taking control of all of the Dothraki forces, forming a horde that would make her late husband weep with pride. Then she marched them back to Meereen to subdue the Masters once and for all.

But more than that was seeing her back in the Dothraki riding leathers, the same type of outfit she wore in Season 1, when she first found her inner strength. Even more importantly, this is the first time we see her wearing black, the House color of Targaryen. Dany’s coming of age happened on the back of a horse, traveling through the Great Grass Sea. It was there that she threw off the shackles of her brother’s expectations, and learned how to rule from Khal Drogo. The Dothraki are a part of her, and without them by her side, she would never conquer Westeros, so it’s appropriate that her first move towards her final acceptance of herself as a Targaryen is in their style of outfit. And it turns out Dothraki riding leathers also make a fabulous set of dragon riding leathers as well. How convenient.
