42. Margaery’s Religious Blues (Season 6)

Margaery’s second entry into our countdown is one that sits at the other end of the spectrum from her first. Where her Season 2 dress was masculine, this one is ultra-feminine. Once again, it comes from the fact that she is dressing to reflect her status as dictated by what a man needs her to be. For Renly, she needed to be the aggressive one, the one running the show. For the High Sparrow, she needed to be a paragon of female devotion, one that he would believe had bought his religion whole, and was a born again member of the Faith.

This is the first time since arriving in King’s Landing way back in Season 3 that we’ve seen her wearing sleeves, and the first time ever that she’s worn a high neckline. Note the demur collar, with the delicate gold filigree, and the rich texture of the fabric. Now that she’s out of rags, she’s dressing as regally as possible, including wearing her crown, as if this will ensure no one will ever treat her as less than a queen again. In this scene with Lady Olenna she’s trying to signal with all her might, that, despite her 24-7-365 act, that she’s still a Tyrell. Notably, it’s also the first time she’s worn the Tyrell colors since her marriage to Tommen in Season 5, and the last time we seen her in them ever.
