Culturess SugarBomb FreakShake
By Kalistrya
All about Australian FreakShakes from Pâtissez and how Culturess took a dip into the craze!
Here at Culturess, we are interested in eating ALL THE THINGS. Last year down under in Canberra, Pâtissez bakery and café decided that they would not only eat all the sweet things, they would do it in a single crazy mug. Thus the FreakShake was born, to brighten and sugar up patrons in the chilly middle of winter. These ice cream creations take food artistry to a whole new level of intensity and sugar.
"The FreakShow began back in June 2015 where all we wanted to do was take the humble milkshake & make it into something special. […] Every element must work together & complement each other to bring a complete flavour experience."
The photos started to pop up all over the internet. The love abounded as the sweet toothed virtual crowd went wild. Early on they had two cold flavors, French Vanilla – Nutella and Salty Pretzel. For the less cold-hardy, two hot flavors, Salty Nutz & the Muddy Pât. I’m not totally sure how a hot FreakShake works without melting the components, but it sounds delicious on a chilly day. Of course, the incredible nature of FreakShakes easily fit into memes.
Since then, the bakery has switched up the available FreakShake FreakShow to cycle flavor combinations in and out to keep things interesting. In addition to the FreakShakes, Pâtissez also creates wildly beautiful cakes in the modern non-frosted sides vein and savory cafe foods. They’ve done well in riding the wave of popularity, consequently opening two more locations internationally in Malaysia and Singapore with an eye on additional spots in Thailand and China.
Other FreakShakes
The excitement over these concoctions hasn’t gone unnoticed by eateries in other cities. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Copycat versions of crazy, intense shakes have popped up from London to New York City to Ontario. These three insane examples come closest to showing finesse and complexity beyond just playing baked goods and treats Jenga on top of a milkshake.
Finally after looking at all these mouthwatering photos, I felt inspired to give creating my own imitation FreakShake a try to celebrate the launch of Culturess. It seems like the best of them center around a theme, which leaves room for it to be crazy, while avoiding a garage sale of everything sugary shoved into a cup.
