4 – We Don’t Talk Anymore – Charlie Pruth ft. Selena Gomez

My last true encounter with Selena Gomez was on the Disney channel, so I did not expect to like “We Don’t Talk Anymore” as much as I did. Gomez and Pruth’s beautiful, melodic duet songs like something straight out of a mythical version of HIgh School Musical that didn’t make my ears bleed. It’s more like gentler, modern musical theatre than the “tropical house” music it’s branded as. I l do love all the tropical rhythms and sounds we’re hearing in the songs this summer.

But yes, this live performance! I haven’t heard such a well-blended duet yet in this year’s songs. My only regret is that we don’t hear more of the smooth harmonies the two pull off so well during the verses, since most of the piece is in unison. Perhaps that’s indicative of the piece’s themes. Pruth refers to it as the conversation that happens a month after a break-up where you try to remain friends. It’s heartbreakingly beautiful in its simplicity.
