9 Flora’s Black Forest Gateau

From Week One in the tent, the Black Forest Gateau showstopper challenge was quite a structured one. Mary Berry has her own recipe for Black Forest Gateaus of course, and she frowned upon anyone who didn’t stick to the basics spelled out in the brief. (She also lectured thoroughly on how they’re not really Black Forest Gateaus if you stray too far from the recipe in the first Masterclass episode that aired over Christmas.)

But though Marie was the one to get Star Baker that week, the Gateau that stood out to be was Flora’s. In this we see both the talent she has, but also the roots of her downfall. She layered chocolate and cherry sponge cakes, with fluffy white buttercream between layers so that even un-iced down the sides the cake looked appetizing. But though it was impressive, it also wasn’t *quite* the brief. and though Mary let it slide here, Flora’s habit of straying from said brief would turn otu to be her Achilles’s heel down the line.
