Whopperrito: Burger King’s Answer to Chipotle
The lines are bleeding and nothing is clearly defined in the world of fast food any more. Burger King has its own take on Mexican food, the Whopperrito. Not completely a burrito in flavor, but a Whopper cut up and packed into a tortilla instead of a bun. No worries, it’s TOTALLY DIFFERENT than a Whopper. The beef has some Tex-Mex seasoning and a queso sauce replaces the mayonnaise.
I admit it, I enjoy a terrible pun and the name itself is giggle-worthy enough that I would give this baby a try solely based that. I’m not totally convinced that pickles go well with queso and Tex-Mex spices, but I could be wrong.
After a successful trial run in a local market, the Whopperrito became available nationally on August 15th. The company refers to the Whopper’s identity crisis as a “burger-burrito remix.” Bloomberg interviewed Alex Macedo, North American BK President (I’m going to pretend that part of his job is to wear that scary mask and crown):
"“It’s certainly one of the first times that we’ve tapped into the Tex-Mex category. It’s one of the fastest-growing categories — consumers like the freshness of it, they like the mix of flavors.”"
I hear Chipotle is tapping into the burger category. This is war. Game on.
