Choco Chip Oreos: Not So Chocolate, Not So Oreo
Oreos have really proliferated in flavors in recent years. This time around I had to laugh when I saw Choco Chip Oreos in my local Harris Teeter. Is this an identity crisis trying to tap into the Chips Ahoy! market?
I have to say that these Oreos didn’t really taste like chocolate chip cookies to me at all. They smell more like Golden Oreos with a some artificial brown sugar flavoring than any sort of chocolate chip cookies.
The chocolate “chips” were a couple of tiny dots that don’t really give much chocolate flavor to these not-so-classic cookies. Poking the speckles in the cookies with a toothpick, the “chocolate” doesn’t have much resistance. A look at the ingredient list confirms that there is no actual chocolate present. Due to this lack of discernible chocolate, the cookie portion tastes more like a graham cracker but with the standard Oreo cookie texture. Eating them made me miss the classic Oreo flavor of black cocoa.
The creme filling has the same issue with sparse chocolate flecks. On the plus side, the thick, sticky texture is somewhat like chocolate chip cookie dough. However, the flavor misses the mark of cookie dough and tastes more like artificial brown sugar mixed with shortening.
The whole package together is pretty underwhelming, Chips Ahoy! has nothing to worry about. This is not who Oreo is.
