Flavor Flav’s Houses of Closedness

So this isn’t exactly your standard identity crisis food, it’s more like an identity crisis involving food. Flavor Flav came to prominence in the 80s as a rapper with Public Enemy. He popularized the role of hype man getting the fans excited while wearing big hats and glasses and a normal sized clock on a chain around his neck.

While you and I might not think that yelling “Yeah boy!” during performances qualifies a person to become a restauranteur, we are not Flavor Flav. In 2011, Flav partnered up to open Flav’s Fried Chicken in the unlikely spot of Clinton, Iowa. Four months later, the house was no more due to infighting among owners, bounced checks, and bad business decisions.

Obviously it was still a good idea and Flavor Flav’s House of Flavor in Las Vegas opened on his birthday in March 2012. It was obviously not an auspicious opening date and the House of Flavor closed six months later In September.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again. Flavor Flav’s Chicken & Ribs in Sterling Heights, Michigan opened December 2012 and then closed in July 2013 after being evicted for not paying rent.

How was the flavor?

Around the time that we laughed about the second restaurant try in Vegas, my husband realized he would be there in the near future. Flavor Flav’s House of Flavor went on the To Eat At list, if only to be able to say he did it.

The House was more of a takeout joint with four seats, located in a mini strip mall. The menu was just as ridiculous as you could imagine it to be. He tried the unremarkable fried chicken with sweet potato tots and reported that the secret ingredient is salt, way too much salt.

For dessert he got a red velvet waffle of “Limited Availability.” The verdict on the waffle was that it is definitely red and dish was simply “okay.”

With a lackluster review like that being joined by many more, the unsurprising verdict is that Flavor Flav not be in the food house.
