Fan Theory May Explain Cursed Child Twist

Even before J.K. Rowling launched her #KeepTheSecrets campaign, rumors about Cursed Child circulated, and one fan may have predicted the big twist.

More from Harry Potter

With the previews for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child officially underway, rumors and spoilers are spreading like wildfire. And unless the spoilers (which we’ve reported on here and here) are one big orchestrated troll, the entirety of the plot is available to anyone willing to Google it.

Of course, as any fan knows, you don’t need rumors to theorize; sometimes all you need is a little help from canon, and your own speculation and imagination. This fact was demonstrated when Hypable reported one fan’s prediction of the big Cursed Child plot twist, hypothesized long before we had any substantial information whatsoever about Harry’s next journey.

WHY MUST YOU SPOIL EVERYTHING!?!

This is your last chance. If you don’t want to know, turn back now…

Reddit user sappy6977 broached their theory way back in September, before we knew anything about Cursed Child other than the fact that it was in the works. The theory goes that Voldemort and Bellatrix had a child together—which, if the play’s rumors are true, is now less theory and more canonical fact—and the details state that Bellatrix’s absence during Dumbledore’s death in Half-Blood Prince (the book) is due to the fact that she’s giving birth to aforementioned child, who grows up to be Delphi in Cursed Child. This theory goes on to say that this may have been J.K. Rowling’s intention all along, and not a new twist invented for the play.

We’ve heard time and again how Bellatrix’s devotion to Voldemort was saturated with an obsessive love for him, but that’s not how procreation works. Voldemort may have shown some emotion at Bellatrix’s death, but considering what we know of his character, that may have more to do with the fact that he’s lost his last, most loyal servant, than any genuine feeling for her. Then again, procreation doesn’t necessitate mutual romance, either, so it stands to reason that Rowling may have plotted this all along.

Could this be the case? Personally, I doubt it. For one thing, Rowling had no intention of continuing the series after Deathly Hallows, and only did so when someone else suggested what would become the Cursed Child story. Furthermore, I’m not even sure when Bellatrix would have had the time to be pregnant, active as she was in both wars, nor can I wrap my head around the fact that Voldemort apparently had enough human left in him to father a child.

If this fan theory and the Cursed Child spoilers are true, though, I guess I’ll just have to get used to it, and hope that further detail can better explain it.
