February 13th, Galentine’s Day, is the perfect excuse to cuddle up with your gal pals and indulge in a movie marathon.
There is almost nothing in this world as magical and inclusive and lovely and exciting and complicated as being a lady. The trouble is, often, the only people who recognize womanhood as a glorious and celebration-worthy phenomenon are other women. In normal everyday life, this is utter garbage. We don’t get paid as much. We don’t have national, days-off-from-work holidays in our honor. We aren’t taken seriously, or regarded as fundamentally equal, or treated like full human beings by non-women at large. And it’s frequently nightmarish to admit that, seemingly, our only allies are those who function within the same socio-culturally oppressed group as us, and therefore our progress born of solidarity is self-contained. But, you know what? On Galentine’s Day, none of that matters!!!
On Galentine’s Day, a holiday invented by feminist hero and the very best lady-friend in existence, Leslie Knope, women reign supreme and we all worship at the alters of each other. We don’t worry if caring about how our hair looks is regressive. We don’t spend time fuming about Twitter trolls or meninists. As Leslie puts it, “It’s only the best day of the year. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.” And (at the mild risk of falling into stereotypes here) there’s no denying that being on a couch with your best gals, pointedly recognizing each of your strengths and building each other up while surrounded by snacks with a perfectly curated movie line-up at the ready is truly the DREAM OF DREAMS!
