Musician and Activist Ani DiFranco Will Release a Memoir

Ani DiFranco’s still making music, but she’ll also be publishing a memoir about her experiences as a musician and as a social activist.

Should you be participating in a book challenge this year, it’s almost certain that a memoir or a book published in 2017 will be on that list, since they’re relatively common choices. Well, technically speaking, the book we’re about to discuss may or may not come out in 2017. However, this announcement did come out today. Viking Books released a statement today announcing a forthcoming memoir from artist and activist Ani DiFranco, also confirmed by the Associated Press.

The book sounds like it will not mince any words about DiFranco’s life, according to the accompanying press release. In the book, she plans on discussing her emancipation at the age of 15 as well as her musical career. (Her label, Righteous Babe Records, was formed in 1990, and the label’s still running today.) Of course, she’ll also talk about her work on issues of social justice.

In particular, she has focused a lot on reproductive rights in recent years. She actually released a song last year, “Play God“, that discusses a woman’s right to choose. Said single will feature on an upcoming album, Binary, currently slated for a May 2017 release.

Righteous Babe Records confirms that DiFranco has not yet finished writing the book. This memoir also currently doesn’t have a title or much of anything at the moment aside from the promise that it will exist.

If nothing else, it’s often more interesting to read someone’s story in their own words. Even the most intimate of biographies still tends to have a slight amount of disconnect.

In the same statement from Viking Books, DiFranco stated that she’s “excited about exploring this new kind of writing and making a book,” since she’s more accustomed to songwriting.
