Could we get an X-Men: The Animated Series revival on Disney+?
Most ’90s kids grew up watching X-Men: The Animated Series. During a panel at Wizard World, the producers said a revival may not be so far away.
X-Men: The Animated Series holds a special place in the hearts of many ’90s kids who more than likely currently find themselves invested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Yes, X-Men: The Animated Series was one of the best superhero cartoons of the 1990s, and it still has a solid following 20 years later. The show ran for five seasons from 1992 to 1997, airing on Fox Kids.
On Friday, during a virtual panel at Wizard World, producer Larry Houston spoke on the possibility of a revival on Disney+:
"“We’ve made conversation, and it’s up to them to make the decision, but we’ve let them know that we’re all available for whatever they want to do in the future … whatever they wanted to do if we had all the original team.”"
He goes on to say that they would be onboard for a one-off episode or a five-episode miniseries, something the show did incredibly well.
Is this something we really need? Despite how much the original run screams 1990s, it holds up incredibly well. Perhaps it’s smartest to leave it alone.
And yet, the majority of the cartoons that have had recent reboots have been surprisingly good. Nickelodeon took special care with Hey Arnold, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Invader Zim.
With how increasingly popular superheroes have become in recent years, it might be nice to see a new attempt at the X-Men in a version we grew up with. X-Men: Evolution was a solid show, but it was canceled too soon — and Wolverine and the X-Men didn’t last more than a season. Even the Fox movies didn’t fare well after a while.
There seems to be something that creators don’t understand about the ragtag group of mutants that only The Animated Series seems to have consistently been able to handle. If Disney decides to move forward and brings in the original writers and producers, it’s safe to say a small revival may be just the thing we need in our lives.
